CBD and the elderly
CBD – a cannabinoid from industrial hemp flowers – is one of the safest molecules. It does not have the psychoactive effects typical of THC, and studies using both low and high (1500 mg) daily doses of CBD have not documented overdose.
It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, neuroprotective, antidiabetic and many other effects, as it supports the function of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) (1) (a collection of numerous studies on the topic of CBD and problemsThe task of the latter is to return the body to balance in the event of inflammation, pain, stress, and other problems.
In order for an elderly person to effectively support the body's endocannabinoid system, it is essential to take the right dosage of a quality CBD preparation. More precise instructions on what it should be will have to wait for appropriate research. The experience of Canadian family physician Dr. Daniel Schecter (co-founder and director of the Canadian Cannabinoid Medical Clinic), recorded in Forbes magazine, already shows that most elderly people benefit from a daily dosage of CBD between 40 and 100 mg for problems such as pain and anxiety, as well as for general well-being.
This does not mean that an elderly person immediately starts taking 40 mg of CBD per day, but with low doses, gradually increasing them to the desired effect. The ideal doses vary, because the functioning or balance of the ECS of each person is different; the metabolism is also different, and the dose is also affected by the use of other medications, etc.
For a healthy adult, Dr. Schecter recommends a starting dose of 5 mg, while for seniors who are taking multiple medications or who are sensitive to medication side effects, he recommends a starting dose of 2.5 mg of CBD. In both cases, the dose should be increased by 2.5 mg every other day or over a week, and the effects should be noted. It usually takes longer for older adults to calm down with psychological problems, so in this case, Dr. Schecter advises increasing the dose slowly (weekly intervals), and for physical problems, more quickly (every other day).
The experiences of many elderly users show that it is good to wait several months for the positive effects of CBD, at least 3-6. It is therefore good to consume it for at least 3 months with a week off and then again for 3 months. It is good for the elderly to also report their CBD consumption to their doctor.
