Pregnancy, breast-feeding and cannabis
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are special, sacred times in a woman's life. It's when the body is at its peak of strength and vitality, and every expecting woman should feel beautiful, healthy, and completely accepted. But sometimes, feelings can be different.
Pregnancy and cannabis
Research published in January 2014 in the journal Reproduction offered interesting evidence that proper care of the endocannabinoid system contributes to healthy placental development and, consequently, to a good pregnancy outcome.
Breastfeeding and cannabis
They also found that cannabinoids are naturally present in breast milk. The human body contains cannabinoid receptors, both for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) and all the other cannabinoids present in cannabis.
Research shows that breast milk naturally contains cannabinoids, identical to those found in cannabis, which are essential for proper development. Cell membranes in the body are equipped with cannabinoid receptors; when activated by cannabinoids and other nutrients, the cell is protected against viruses, harmful bacteria, cancer cells, etc. Breast milk is a rich source of endocannabinoids, special neuromodulatory lipids that teach the newborn to suckle.
If there were no cannabinoids in milk, children would not know how to feed themselves, nor would they have the desire to do so, which would lead to various abnormalities or even death. Breastfed babies thus receive significant doses of cannabinoids, which cause hunger and accelerate their growth and development. The cannabinoids in milk also calm and relax the baby.
Dr. Melanie Dreher studied women who used cannabis throughout their pregnancy and then into the first year of their children's lives. She found that the children socialized earlier, responded more quickly, and made eye contact earlier.
Hemp also protects breasts
Attention should be paid to another important aspect of the use of cannabinoids.
Researchers have found that CBD from cannabis can turn off a gene responsible for the formation of metastases in an aggressive form of breast cancer.
