CBD for children's health
Natural industrial hemp flower extract (CBD), which has been stripped of THC, can also be a good support for maintaining or restoring health in children.
Although there is no solid evidence that THC in cannabis preparations disrupts normal brain development, parents who are self-medicating with CBD extracts still prefer to opt for natural preparations made from industrial hemp flowers, which do not contain psychoactive THC, for safety reasons. There are not many of these on the market: for example, brand preparations have been available in Slovenia since 2017. CBDEX.
According to research to date, CBD is one of the safest molecules in terms of side effects. Its popularity is growing not only because of this, but also because of its many therapeutic potentialsMany parents therefore see hope in non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG and others to solve many problems in children.
CBD can be used to successfully support children not only with mild health and well-being problems (e.g. stress, anxiety, insomnia, motion sickness, decreased immunity, asthma, pain, headaches, dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin problems, etc.), but even with serious ones, such as addictions, post-traumatic stress syndrome, ADHD, autism and epilepsy. Learn more about how CBD helps with more serious illnesses below and by reading expert recommendations, but here are some examples of mild problems in children that parents usually solve with low-dose CBD preparations.
CBD and children's anxiety
Not only adults but also children can be prisoners of anxiety. This is often the result of various stressful situations at school, in society, at home or elsewhere. CBD calms down stress and improves psychological well-being by calming the nervous system.
CBD and motion sickness in children
Maintaining balance, sensing the body in space, what is below and what is above... - all this is carefully regulated by the vestibular system. It consists of the balance system in the inner eye, our vision and proprioception. When their coordinated functioning is disrupted (which happens especially to children while driving a car on a winding road, sailing on a rough sea, spinning on a merry-go-round...), we feel it as nausea, dizziness and vomiting.
Because taking CBD supports the body's endocannabinoid system, which regulates virtually all other body systems (nervous, hormonal, musculoskeletal, etc.), it also helps coordinate the functioning of all components that take care of our balance and orientation in space. So CBD can also be an excellent support for calming motion sickness in children. CBD is also known to help calm nausea and vomiting, which occur as a side effect of chemotherapy.
CBD and children's insomnia
Especially due to excessive excitability of the nervous and hormonal system (cortisol) during the day (for example, due to studying, playing games, watching exciting films, looking at computer or TV screens until late at night (blue light)), children can also suffer from insomnia. Excessive excitability of the nervous system and high levels of the hormone cortisol in the evening hours prevent the body from preparing for rest and sleep. Since CBD calms the excited nervous system and helps return the stress hormone cortisol to normal levels, it can support children in calming down and falling asleep. Taking CBD also supports the quality of sleep and thus the regeneration of the body, all of which has a positive effect on children's immunity.
CBD and children's skin problems
Parents report that the body responds well to both topical application and consumption of CBD preparations for many skin problems, such as insect bites, skin damage from falls, bumps, cuts, acne, allergies, dandruff, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, etc. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, immunoregulatory, and antimicrobial potentials of CBD, among other things, have an effect on soothing the listed problems and supporting the regeneration of affected skin.
CBD for more serious health problems in children
Usually, very low doses of CBD are sufficient to achieve balance and better well-being in mild health and well-being problems in children. However, the situation is different in more severe and chronic diseases, such as epilepsy and autism. In order for CBD support in such cases to be as appropriate, effective and safe as possible, it is a good idea to seek appropriate professional assistance.
Although rare, doctors only decide to use CBD therapy when other efforts of official medicine do not show satisfactory results. The pioneer in this field is mainly pediatrician Prof. Dr. David Neubauer, Dr. med.. In his lectures, it is heard that approximately one third of children (and adults) with epilepsy are unsuccessfully treated with the means available to the official profession, so he encourages the profession and parents to consider therapies for such and similar diseases with cannabinoid preparations. He himself recently, together with a group of experts, successfully demonstrated in a clinical study on 66 children with intractable epilepsy that CBD is more than excellent at controlling even severe cases of epilepsy. You can read more about this in the brochure Recommendations for the use of cannabidiol and cannabinoids/medical cannabis in pediatrics - child neurology Among other things, you can read: “In children in our study, we used effective doses of cannabidiol, from 5 mg/kg/day to 16 mg/kg/day (average 8-10 mg/kg/day) … The therapeutic effect was most often achieved at a dose of 8 mg/kg/day … Thirty-two children (48.5 %) had more than 50% improvement in seizures, of which 14 (21.2 %) were completely seizure-free (100% improvement). None of the children experienced worsening of seizures, and 15 (22.7 %) had no effect at all. In addition to a reduction in seizures, the patients also noted an improvement in their behavior (seven), better sleep (seven), improved gross motor function (five), greater alertness and better cognitive function (five and three, respectively), better appetite (three), happier mood (three), better speech (three), better face-to-face contact (two), and better communication (two).
